The Crown's Meg Bellamy has opened up about internet trolls saying she was "too fat" to play the Princess of Wales.
The actress plays Kate in the hit Netflix drama's sixth and final series, which, among other things, explored the budding relationship between her character and the young Prince of Wales. Speaking in a new interview, Meg said: "I'd had this long day of press, it had gone well, then I went on my phone and there was all this negative stuff about my body online. The comments were mostly, 'You're too fat to play Kate'. That was a glimpse into being a woman in this industry."
Meg continued to Mail On Sunday's You magazine: "I thought, 'OK, that's a sign to distance yourself, because it doesn't mean anything'. You can't listen to that sort of stuff. Not least because most of it is written by internet trolls, or men called Gary who are holding a fish in their profile picture. I've had so many amazing things happen to me. They're the losers for saying that. I'm living my best life over here."
Reflecting further on playing the Princess of Wales, Meg said: "I've tried to put the character behind me. But, of course," she added, referring to Kate's cancer diagnosis, "I so feel for her and for the family."
Speaking about researching the role, Meg revealed that she spent many hours studying the life of Kate. She revealed about her preparation in which she got to know her voice and mannerisms: "I spent so much time 'with' her. You get this weird parasocial connection. She's so gracious and wonderful and self-assured. I will always be fond of Kate."
Speaking about filming on location at St. Andrew's University in Scotland, Meg said: "The word got out on our first day that we were filming there. We'd be in the courtyard of the university and we'd look up and every window would be full of students filming us. I remember being, like: 'My life is going to be like this.' And obviously I went back to Windsor and it's not like that! Which is great."
Meg also revealed that she was given the contact details of Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who played the late Diana, Princess of Wales, in series five and six. Meg said that she shared advice on playing the part in The Crown: "She's been so supportive. I can call her about anything."
Kate took six months away from the spotlight after revealing her cancer diagnosis before making her grand public return at Trooping the Colour following chemotherapy. Despite there being plenty of optimism surrounding her recovery, Kate admitted in a social media post that she is "not out of the woods" as yet, with her treatment continuing.
