Jeremy Allen White joins the Star Wars franchise in a role nobody could have expected. While Jeremy Allen White made a name for himself on the hit television show Shameless, he exploded in popularity thanks to FX on Hulu's The Bear, for which White won the Primetime Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy back to back years in 2023 and 2024. White is next set to star as music icon Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me from Nowhere, produced by Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios. White is staying in the Disney family as he will now join a galaxy far, far away in the next Star Wars feature film.

Deadline reports that Jeremy Allen White will be voicing Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian & Grogu. The news first broke on The Kristian Harloff Show, where Jeff Sneider revealed the news on camera. Rotta the Hutt debuted in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the baby son of Jabba the Hutt, who the Separatists kidnapped to frame the Republic and get Jabba to join their cause. The Jedi, including the newly introduced Ahsoka Tano, later saved Rotta. Deadline reports that Rotta the Hutt will play a significant role in the film, yet Lucasfilm has not officially commented on the news.

Right now, little information is known about The Mandalorian & Grogu. The only other confirmed cast members are Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian and Sigourney Weaver in a key role. The character of Zeb, who first debuted in Star Wars: Rebels and appeared in live-action for the first time in The Mandalorian Season 3, will also appear in the movie. The movie is directed by Jon Favreau, who created The Mandalorian and is no stranger to blockbuster films, having directed Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King. The film's script is written by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who created Rotta for The Clone Wars movies, and it appears that nearly eighteen years later, he is revisiting the character.

Rotta's involvement in The Mandalorian & Grogu is certainly interesting as the character might be the key to tying the film to various plot points across the Disney+ Star Wars projects. No reference to Rotta the Hutt was made following Boba Fett taking over Jabba's criminal empire in The Book of Boba Fett, so it is unclear if the young Hutt broke away from his father or if he is now looking to reclaim the criminal empire. Rotta was rescued by Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson in the live-action Disney+ series. White's Rotta could also play a role in Ahsoka Season 2, which will likely debut on Disney+ in 2026, the same year as The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters.

Casting Jeremy Allen White as Rotta is undoubtedly an interesting choice and not one anybody could have expected. While Star Wars indeed loves casting well-known actors in voice roles for characters, from Daniel Craig as a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens to Nick Frost currently voicing SM-33 on Skeleton Crew, White is a curious pick for Rotta given how the Hutts have primarily been depicted in Star Wars. One has to wonder if Rotta will speak in Huttese like his father, Jabba, or if Lucasfilm will have Rotta speak in Basic (The Star Wars in-universe term for English) like his uncle Ziro the Hutt in The Clone Wars. Playing a voice role in The Mandalorian & Grogu also opens the door for White to play another character in a future Star Wars project if he wants to. Jeremy Allen White is an exciting addition to Star Wars, but his character is unexpected.
