Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which was released on Dec. 20, 2024, has raced to yet another achievement at the domestic box office. Per Screen Rant, via Box Office Mojo, the Sonic threequel has become one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024. Sonic 3, starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves, is at No. 9 on the top 10 list.
The latest Sonic movie passed Kung Fu Panda 4 and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to take the No. 9 spot. Holding steady at No. 8 for 2024 is Twisters, which grossed $267 million as opposed to Sonic 3's $204.8 million. Last week, Sonic motored past its two previous franchise films to become the highest-grossing film domestically in the series based on the Sega game. Sonic 2 trails the third film by about $14 million.
Internationally, however, Sonic 3, which has earned a total of $385.1 million worldwide, trails the second film, which made $405.4 million. The movie is expected to be released on digital platforms on Jan. 21. A 4K Steelbook and DVD release of the film is already available for pre-order.

The Franchise Crossed the $1B Mark
The Sonic franchise also recently crossed another major milestone - earning $1 billion across the three movies. Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Asher commented on the achievement saying, "We are so overjoyed with the amazing response to the Sonic the Hedgehog films from audiences and fans around the world and are proud to be part of this incredible world-class filmmaking team that has come together to build this franchise. Actor Ben Schwartz, who has been the voice of the titular hedgehog since the first Sonic film, took to the social media platform X to mark the $1 billion achievement. "OVER ONE BILLION DOLLARS?!?!? We truly have the best fans in the universe. None of this happens without you. So thank you thank you thank you," he wrote. "Remember the first trailer? We have all come a long way. And we have so much more to go," he added.

A fourth Sonic movie is already in development at Paramount Pictures and is anticipated to be released in the spring of 2027. The franchise is a huge success, having crossed the billion-dollar mark globally across the three films. Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the trilogy as well as his character's grandfather, Gerald in Sonic 3, said he isn't ruling out the possibility of returning for the fourth film.
"I'm definitely open," said Carrey in an interview with Cinema Today. "I'm open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea and if I go, 'That sounds fun,' then I'll do it. I don't feel locked into anything in life unless it's something that interests me. Certainly, I love this crew. I love this gang that makes these movies and I love the fans," Carrey said.
The first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies are streaming on Paramount+.
