During a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday, the team behind Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians shared some exciting season 2 casting updates, which, by extension, teased a major change from the sophomore outing's source material. Following the success of its first season, which adapted Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief novel to the small screen, Percy Jackson season 2 will tackle Riordan's Sea of Monsters. Percy Jackson's cast of characters will grow alongside the epic story, which made it even more exciting when Riordan shared that Daniel Diemer will play Percy Jackson's Tyson in the second season.
In addition to being the titular character's half-brother, Tyson is Percy Jackson's resident cyclops. Although Percy (Walker Scobell) and Tyson meet in New York City in Sea of Monsters, the half-siblings soon find themselves at Camp Half-Blood, where Poseidon officially "claims" Tyson as his own. However, things aren't quite right. Someone has poisoned the tree of the demigod Thalia, which leaves the campers' sanctuary vulnerable to attacks. At first, Percy, Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Tyson leave to find their buddy Grover, but, soon enough, they're pulled into the quest to find the Camp-saving Golden Fleece.

Although Percy Jackson season 2's Tyson casting announcement was met with excitement, the reveal hints at a big change for the upcoming outing. Best known for roles in Alice Wu's coming-of-age movie The Half of It, Mike Flanagan's horror series The Midnight Club, Hulu's crime drama Under the Bridge, Daniel Diemer has appeared in a wide variety of projects. At SDCC, Riordan told attendees that Diemer "bring[s] a whole new dimension to Tyson" through his talent and enthusiasm. At 6'4", there's no denying that Diemer also has the right stature to play Percy's cyclops half-brother.
...Percy and Tyson are supposed to be roughly the same age.
However, there is one element of the casting that's worth flagging. Diemer, who was born in 1996, is 28 years old, while Walker Scobell, who was born in 2009, is 15 years old. In Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, Percy and Tyson are supposed to be roughly the same age. Based on Diemer's real-life age, it's possible Tyson will be canonically older in the series as well. While Tyson becoming Percy's older half-brother isn't at the same level as the Percy Jackson season 1 ending twist, it's still an interesting development.

However, even if Tyson is just slightly younger than Percy, that implies Poseidon broke his pact with Zeus and Hades -- even after fathering Percy. However, if Tyson is older than his brother in Percy Jackson season 2, that means Poseidon kept his oath after Percy's birth.
