A new Power Rangers Netflix show has reportedly been canceled after two years in development. Debuting in 1993 as the TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise has grown to become one of the most beloved and successful in popular culture, consisting of 30 seasons of television across 22 themed shows, three theatrical movies, and a television special. The 30th and most recent season, 2023's Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, was intended to be the last within the established canon, with a reboot season planned for a 2025 release.
However, it seems this will no longer be the case, as the newest Power Rangers series, which was in development with Netflix, has now been canceled. According to TVLine, the live-action show will no longer move forward with the streaming giant attached, despite the involvement of Daisy Jones & The Six producer Jenny Klein and I Am Not Okay With This co-creator Jonathan Entwistle. Hasbro Entertainment, the owner of the Power Rangers franchise, will look to move forward with another creative partner.
Will A Power Rangers Reboot Happen Any Time Soon? The Franchise Is Looking To Reinvent Itself, But It Could Take Longer Than Expected Close
A franchise as successful as Power Rangers is unlikely to be off-air for very long, but reinventing and rebooting the established canon is not without its risks. Over 30 years, the numerous Power Rangers shows have fluctuated in quality and popularity, and plans for a reboot would no doubt seek to return to the unique and quirky appeal that made it so popular with kids, while also refreshing and updating it for a new generation. Who might be best positioned to facilitate this remains to be seen, but there will likely be no shortage of interested parties.
It is also unclear whether Klein or Entwistle will continue to be attached to the project. The latter joined the franchise in 2020 to oversee the development of movies and TV shows within the Power Rangers universe, so it seems likely that he will continue to be involved moving forward. This will depend on scheduling conflicts, and Entwistle's upcoming Karate Kid sequel is expected to be released in 2025. Meanwhile, Klein signed a two-year deal with eOne in 2022, the company that has been spearheading Power Rangers live-action projects.
The development at Netflix falling through will delay any plans for a new Power Rangers series, but Hasbro and eOne will be keen to get the show back on air as soon as possible. This will mean securing a new deal, and finalizing the perfect team for a Power Rangers reboot. There is also the matter of a fourth planned movie that is expected to involve Entwistle, but it seems likely that the first priority will be to reboot the show. Hasbro is now seeking a new development partner, so perhaps new updates will arrive soon.
