'Moana 2' Trailer Offers a Splash of New Music and Teases Dwayne Johnson's Return Staff, 5/29/2024 Get ready for an epic adventure in Moana 2! With the original voice cast returning and new songwriters on board, this sequel promises to captivate fans of the beloved franchise. On Wednesday, May 29, Walt Disney Animation Studios debuted a new trailer for Moana 2, a sequel to the hit 2016 film. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are set to reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.
"Three years since her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui," reads a synopsis.
"Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced."
"Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," said Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger in a previous statement. In 2023, the first installment was the most-streamed movie of the year, according to Nielsen.

David Derrick Jr. makes his directorial debut with Moana 2 as its director and writer after working with Disney on a number of its animated films in recent years. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i return as songwriters and composers from the original, while The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical's Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear will replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as additional songwriters.
Cravalho, who recently starred in Mean Girls, confirmed on Instagram in February she was returning to voice Moana in the sequel. For the Moana live-action adaptation, the actress will serve as an executive producer while another actress plays the title role.
Johnson, who voices the demigod Maui, shared in a May 21 Instagram post that he had completed recording his part for the upcoming sequel. "That's an official wrap (for now) on MAUI's portion of our upcoming MOANA 2," he wrote.
