Is Lin-Manuel Miranda's next big musical almost here?
The creator of Hamilton and In the Heights announced today a concept album inspired by The Warriors, a 1965 novel by Sol Yurick about gangs in New York City in the 1960s. The book was later adapted into a cult-classic film in 1979 by director Walter Hill.
The concept album was co-created with Eisa Davis. "We've spent the past three years musicalizing the Warriors' journey home, from the South Bronx to Coney Island," Davis and Miranda said in a statement. "Along the way we've gotten to work with a lot of our favorite artists, and we'll be announcing their roles on the album in the weeks ahead. We can't wait to share these songs with you on October 18th."
The book, per the publisher, "chronicles one New York City gang's nocturnal journey through the seedy, dangerous subways and city streets of the 1960s. Every gang in the city meets on a sweltering July 4 night in a Bronx park for a peace rally. The crowd of miscreants turns violent after a prominent gang leader is killed and chaos prevails over the attempt at order. The Warriors follows the Dominators making their way back to their home territory without being killed. The police are prowling the city in search of anyone involved in the mayhem." The movie adaptation, which is streaming on Paramount+, is now a cult film, though author Yurick allegedly hated it.
If Miranda eventually adapts The Warriors for stage, it would be his first full stage musical since Hamilton premiered in 2016 -- though he did recently contribute lyrics to the recent musical New York, New York. Since Hamilton, Miranda has also created soundtracks for animated movies Moana, Vivo, and Encanto; directed tick, tick... BOOM!; and acted in Mary Poppins Returns, His Dark Materials, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and the film adaptation of In The Heights, plus a plethora of guest roles.
The 26-song concept album will release on October 18, 2024, and is currently available for preorder at warriorsalbum.com.
