Katie Holmes is paying tribute to her late Dawson's Creek costar Obi Ndefo after his sister, Nkem, shared on Facebook on Saturday that her brother had died. He was 51.
Over the weekend, per PEOPLE, Holmes shared her condolences as part of a caption to her Instagram Story, which has since expired. "He was wonderful to work with and such a kind man. I send prayers and grace to his family. Rest in Peace," Holmes wrote underneath a screenshotted photo of a tribute reel first shared by fellow Dawson's star Mary-Margaret Humes.
Humes, who played Dawson's mother Gale Leery in the teen drama, wrote in that tribute on Saturday: "These words don't come easy. It's hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life's challenges of recent." Humes' reel also included several photos and videos of Obi on set of the show.
Humes concluded: "I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior."
Nkem didn't provide any details surrounding her brother's death in her post, which included a throwback photo of herself and Obi smiling. "Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother and knowing he's finally at peace," Nkem wrote.
Per the Los Angeles Times, Obi became a double amputee in 2019 after a tragic hit-and-run accident. According to the report, the actor was putting groceries into his car when a drunk driver slammed into him from behind, leading to damage so severe both legs needed to be amputated.

When Dawson's Creek debuted in 1998, Obi played Bodie, a chef who partnered with Humes' character to run the Capeside fish bistro, Leery's Fresh Fish. He was also the boyfriend of Bessie Potter (Nina Repeta), the older sister of Holmes' iconic character, Joey Potter. Obi was also known for roles in The Jamie Foxx Show, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Angel, Star Trek: Voyager, NYPD Blue, The West Wing, and Stargate SG-1.
