Summary Outer Range , starring Josh Brolin, canceled after two seasons on Amazon. Show received mixed reviews and struggled to attract a large audience. Brolin's next projects include Brothers and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
After just two seasons at Amazon, Outer Range has come to an end. Word came down on Wednesday that the Josh Brolin-led sci-fi western series would not see a third season on Prime Video, and there's no indication that it is being shopped around to other streaming platforms. Beginning in 2022, Outer Range starred Brolin as ranch owner Royal Abbot, a man who discovers a mysterious black void on his homestead that brings with it a whole mess of trouble, including the disappearance of his daughter-in-law, and a rival family trying to take over his land.
As per Variety, the outlet confirmed on Wednesday the demise of Outer Range after two seasons. They mentioned that while Amazon does not release viewership data for its shows like Netflix does, Outer Range did manage to find itself in the top 10 original streaming rankings according to Nielsen data, peaking at number three. Outer Range did receive generally favorable reviews during its run, with season 1 holding a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and season 2 a 92%, for a two-season average of an 85% approval rating overall.
Outer Range TV-MA Release Date April 15, 2022 Main Genre Drama Cast Josh Brolin , Imogen Poots , Lili Taylor , Tom Pelphrey , Tamara Podemski Seasons 1
In addition to Brolin, Outer Range also starred the likes of Imogen Poots, Lily Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, and the incomparable Will Patton among its ensemble cast. The series marked Josh Brolin's return to television in a recurring role in almost 20 years following his portrayal of Senator Bill Sterling in the 2003 drama, Mister Sterling, which lasted for one season on NBC.
Why Did Outer Range Struggle to Keep Its Audience? And What's Next For Josh Brolin? Close
Debuting shortly after the fourth season of Yellowstone came to a conclusion, Outer Range seemed poised to become a success by capitalizing on the popularity of the modern Western. Unfortunately, it wasn't the only game in town, as audiences also had shows like 1883 (a Yellowstone spinoff), Walker, and Joe Pickett to choose from. However, while those series were grounded in reality, Outer Range looked to separate itself from the pack by following somewhat in the footsteps of another sci-fi Western, HBO's Westworld.
While they're obviously two very different shows, with Westworld set in a dystopian future where androids become self-aware, and Outer Range in modern times, there's no denying that the Amazon series certainly hoped to capture some of those sci-fi elements that drew audiences to the HBO creation. Though with a mix of science fiction, family drama, and mystery, Outer Range never really seemed to be able to define itself, and was in some ways a jumbled mess akin to a young adult trying to figure out their place in the world. While it did have its fanbase, it just wasn't as large as Amazon was hoping for to justify the reported $6 million it cost for each episode to be produced.
