Amazon MGM Studios' Red One will be streaming sooner than expected after playing for a month in theaters. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, the blockbuster holiday film failed to impress critics and audiences alike during its theatrical run. Despite the star power in front of the camera, a big-budget adventure flick about saving Santa failed to get people in movie theater seats, even though November was a record-breaking month for the format. Red One has its fans, but it will be looking to make a much bigger flash in the streaming world sooner rather than later.

Red One arrives on Prime Video this Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024. Hailing from Amazon, the film was always expected to arrive on the streaming platform at some point. However, after getting a relatively short theatrical release and disappointing box office numbers, it seems they have accelerated that process. Red One has grossed $163 million worldwide on a $250 million budget, and it's well on its way to not getting its steep production costs back. It is likely that the Prime Video release will boost the film's viewership numbers, especially heading into the peak of the holiday season, but there is a lot of ground to cover for Red One that even Santa would have a hard time fulfilling overnight.
In addition to Johnson and Evans, Red One stars Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel and J.K. Simmons. Jake Kasdan, known for the Jumanji sequel films also starring Johnson, directed the Christmas blockbuster for Amazon MGM Studios. Check out the official synopsis:

Could 'Red One' Find Its Stride This Christmas Season? Close
Despite a 31% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, Red One boasts a shockingly high 90% Popcornmeter audience rating. The film also got an impressive A- CinemaScore, one of the more accurate barometers for gauging general audience satisfaction. Unfortunately, the positive response did not equal box office success. Yes, some of that is due to Red One also competing with other major record-breaking releases in November, but it simply seems audiences did not feel any rush to see it. Their patience will be rewarded as it heads to Prime Video this week at no extra cost to the streaming service, but those wanting a sequel will likely be waiting a very, very long time.

There is still a high possibility that Red One gets the love it so much desires on the streaming service. But there is something to be said about star power these days, and what truly qualifies as a modern movie star, one that can single-handedly get people into movie theater seats. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans leading a Christmas film after starring in several blockbuster franchises should have been like printing cash. Instead, the lack of recognizable IP and a truly ridiculous budget number has Amazon crossing its fingers Prime Video can save it from obscurity. The craziest part? Red One will probably be the most-watched movie on streaming within a week, because why not?
