The Joker in The Dark Knight embodies a special kind of madness. He revels in chaos, and will never miss an opportunity to stir the pot and force people to feel uncomfortable. It is not always clear why he does all of these things, and that helps add to his unpredictable and upsetting nature. Every moment the villain spends onscreen holds disastrous possibilities, and never is that madness more evident than in this line.
Telling a changing story about how he got his scars, itself likely a lie he made up on the spot, Joker ends with this iconic line. An incredible close to the character's journey, Arthur Fleck appears on television where Robert De Niro's Joker character berates and pushes him. Through a long journey of discovering madness in a world where he is actively discouraged from being himself and is pushed and prodded with cruelty and jokes, the film's plot culminates with these words. Following this announcement, Fleck kills De Niro's character and takes to an uprising on the street.
Mental health is an extremely serious concern that is too often addressed in superficial warnings and labels that do not actually solve the problem. Fleck's descent into madness here is a product of his environment. This is not to say there is no culpability for the actions that The Joker takes in this or any other DC project, but it does enforce the importance of community in caring for and addressing these conditions. This scene and this line are then powerful and effective in communicating the thesis of Phillips' film.
