Unmade 1980s James Bond Movie Sounds More Like Indiana Jones Than 007
Former James Bond star Daniel Craig says that he doesn't care who plays 007 after him. The star played the titular MI6 Secret Agent starting in 2006's Casino Royale and went on to make four more James Bond films, including Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die, in which Craig's Bond meets his demise. 2021's No Time to Die marked his last movie in the franchise. So far, there's no casting information about who will play the titular character in Bond 26, but speculation has run rampant.

While promoting his new movie Queer, Variety asked Craig who he'd like to see picking up the torch of James Bond. The star laughed and honestly said, "I don't care." Craig also initially struggled to remember how many James Bond movies he has made, but eventually counted to five, while his co-star Drew Starkey joked that he made "too many." It seems clear that Craig is done with James Bond. He is the sixth actor to play the role and has spent more than a decade as 007. With No Time to Die dragging Bond out of retirement for one last mission, the film is a farewell to Craig's time in the franchise. In the new interview, it looks like Craig has completely moved on, mentally and physically, from the Bond chapter of his acting career, largely laughing off the questions revolving around his time with the franchise.

Craig enjoys a productive post-Bond era. His next film Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is set to be released in limited theaters in the United States on November 27. It follows an outcast American expat (Craig) as he pursues a young man (Starkey) in 1950s Mexico City. Craig also returns as Benoit Blanc in the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, set to be released in 2025. With the actor enjoying plenty of fruitful roles, it's understandable why he would be keen to leave James Bond behind, having thoroughly explored the character across several movies.

For a franchise that's older than Craig, to continue means reinvention and redirection are necessary. There have been many candidates for the next Bond. From House of the Dragon's Matt Smith to Superman actor Henry Cavill, everyone's first choice for James Bond will be different. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been rumored to be offered the role, but nothing has been confirmed officially.

Craig wasn't many people's first choice for Bond either back when his casting broke, but throughout the years, he has proven to be able to carry the James Bond franchise as its lead man. The ideal Bond for the next movie would be in his 30s, charismatic but with a rebellious side, though not too much for 007 to be a villain. Taylor-Johnson seems like a good choice, but only time will tell if he ultimately takes over from Craig.
