Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett Join Colleen Hoover 'Verity' Adaptation Cast Larisha Paul, 12/20/2024 Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett join Anne Hathaway in the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller 'Verity.' Directed by Michael Showalter, the film follows an author grappling with a mysterious accident. It follows 'It Ends With Us,' which grossed over $200 million globally. Two additional actors have been attached to the forthcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller Verity. Last month, Anne Hathaway joined the project in the titular role of Verity Crawford, an author reeling from a mysterious accident. New casting announcements have revealed Josh Hartnett in the role of her husband, Jeremy Crawford, and Dakota Johnson in the role of Lowen Ashleigh, her ghostwriter.
Currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Verity will be directed by Michael Showalter. The director previously worked with Hathaway on the boy band-centric book-to-screen adaptation The Idea of You and will be working with a script from Nick Antosca. The film is coming together after script-writing attempts from Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley with April Maguire, according to Variety.
For Johnson, Verity joins the romantic comedy Materialists and the comedy Splitsville on her forthcoming slate of releases. Hartnett, who led M. Night Shyamalan's psychological thriller Trap earlier this year, is also awaiting the release of the action film Fight or Flight and the James Franco indie drama The Long Home. The Idea of You and Mothers' Instinct marks the most recent appearances from Hathaway, who will later appear in the science fiction film Flowervale Street and the drama Mother Mary.
Verity marks the second Hoover novel to be adapted into a film. It Ends With Us was released in theaters earlier this year and recently made available to stream on Netflix. The film arrived with a fair amount of drama, placing stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni at the center of discourse about the marketing of the film's domestic abuse plot line. Still, the film earned more than $200 million globally.
Verity was released as a standalone novel in 2018, two years after Hoover published It Ends With Us. The self-published book was acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021 and spent 103 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list.
