As fans debate the idea online, Erivo expresses enthusiasm for audience participation, emphasizing the joy of sharing music. Discover more about her thoughts and the film's box office performance. Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has an opinion on whether fans should be able to sing along to her and Ariana Grande's blockbuster movie musical in theaters.
Before the opening of Wicked in theaters on November 22, AMC Theatres announced that singing along to the long-anticipated screen adaptation of the classic 2003 Broadway musical was forbidden.
According to the Indy Star, AMC created a 30-second advisory with clips from Wicked that said, "At AMC Theatres, silence is golden. No talking. No texting. No singing. No wailing. No Flirting. And absolutely no name-calling. Enjoy the magic of movies."
In addition, the national theater chain's spokesperson, Ryan Noonan, told the publication, "AMC has a long-standing policy that prohibits disruptive behavior," he told the publication. "The 'Wicked' preshow spot [which includes 'no singing'] incorporates the themes of the film as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers to not disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wicked sing-alongs also have fans divided online.
However, Erivo told NBC's Today during Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade Thursday that she's open to the idea of theatergoers singing along.
"Good! I'm OK with it," Erivo told Today (via THR). "We spent this long singing it ourselves, it's time for everyone else to join in. It's wonderful."
Erivo, of course, stars as Elphaba in the movie version of Wicked and Grande plays Glinda. The film also stars Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. Rated PG, Wicked is directed by Jon M. Chu.
Despite its sound defeat of Gladiator II in its opening weekend at the box office from November 22-24, Wicked is looking at a second-place finish for the five-day Thanksgiving weekend box office.
According to Variety, Moana 2 is projected to be the new box office champ by the end of the weekend with an estimated North American box office haul of $175 million or more.
Rival studios, the trade publication noted, are projecting a $200 million domestic take for Moana 2, the sequel to Disney's 2016 blockbuster animated musical.
