Brats -- a new documentary about the group of actors in the 1980s known as the "Brat Pack" -- is coming to streaming.
Various members of the Brat Pack starred in such 1980s movie hits as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire and Sixteen Candles. The actors most associated with the Brat Pack movies are Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and Andrew McCarthy.
McCarthy directs and produces Brats -- a Hulu original documentary -- which was produced by ABC News Studios in partnership with indie studio NEON. Brats will premiere on streaming Thursday on Hulu and will be available later this summer on Disney+, according to ABC.
Among the Brat Pack members McCarthy interviews in the documentary are Estevez, Moore, Sheedy and Lowe, as well as some of their '80s acting contemporaries including Lea Thompson, Timothy Hutton and Jon Cryer.
Cryer starred opposite McCarthy and Ringwald in Pretty in Pink but makes it clear in the Brats trailer, "I am not in the Brat Pack."
McCarthy also interviews New York Magazine writer David Blum in Brats, who in an article in the mid-1980s dubbed the group the "Brat Pack" -- a takeoff of the famed showbiz group the "Rat Pack," which included such stars as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop.
Brats was a movie decades in the making, considering that it took Andrew McCarthy ages to reconnect with some of his former co-stars.
"I hadn't seen Rob Lowe in 30 years, Emilio Estevez in 35 years," McCarthy told Salon in a May interview. "Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy, I hadn't seen them in so long. I went to each of them and said, 'Hey, will you talk to me about this? Because we were members of a club that we didn't ask to join that no one else was. We're the only ones that know what it was like.'"
As highlighted in the Brats trailer, at least one Brat Pack member participated in the documentary to resolve some issues with McCarthy.
Emilio Estevez -- who said he previously turned down other interviews about being in the Brat Pack -- tells McCarthy in the trailer why he said yes to his request.
"Because you called me," Estevez tells McCarthy. "It was time that we clear the air on a couple of things."
But that's not all. In a panel discussion about Brats at the Tribeca Film Festival Friday (via Entertainment Weekly), Jon Cryer said of working with McCarthy, "When we made Pretty in Pink we didn't get along because he was a d -- k."
McCarthy -- who attended the Brats panel along with Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy -- didn't disagree with Cryer, saying "That's very true."
"Well, I didn't think he was a d -- k," Moore said, countering Cryer's claim to which the Two and a Half Men star replied, "Well he wasn't a d -- k to you."
Per EW, McCarthy later apologized to Cryer backstage at ABC's talk show The View. After the Tribeca Film Festival panel, Cryer also noted in a post on X, "Not talking out of school here, btw, he was sitting two feet away when I said this. And for the record, the man is a prince. We were just too young to understand each other."
