Suddenly, summertime is sizzling like deep-fried bacon. Inside Out 2's arrival on June 14 clearly invigorated what had been a very disappointing 2024 summer movie season, and box office projections suggested the latest animated adventure from Disney and Pixar would make it a three-peat at No. 1. But A Quiet Place: Day One nearly ruined the party. In what ended up being an extremely close race, the Inside Out sequel managed to edge out Day One on its way to the top spot for the third weekend in a row.
Inside Out 2 made an estimated $57.4 million (per The Numbers) domestically to lay claim to No. 1, while Day One slid into the No. 2 slot with an impressive opening weekend ($53 million). On Friday, the competition between the two films suddenly heated up when Day One actually won Friday in their head-to-head competition with $22.5 million versus Inside Out 2's $17.1 million. But Saturday and Sunday made all the difference.

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.

As usual, families naturally gravitated toward the PG-rated Inside Out 2 over the weekend, which gave the animated film the edge over the R-rated horror flick both days. The Inside Out sequel made $22.2 million on Saturday and $18.1 million on Sunday, while Day One did $17 million and $13.6 million on the same days, respectively. In addition to winning the weekend, Inside Out 2 had its eyes set on yet another prize, too.

While Inside Out 2 enjoys being the top dog for the third weekend in a row, the "emotionally" charged sequel also reached quite the milestone just as cinephiles bid farewell to June and welcome July. Inside Out 2 has officially reached the billion-dollar mark faster than any other animated movie (per Forbes). At the time of this writing, the Amy Poehler-led adventure has made $469.3 million domestically and another $545.5 million for a worldwide take of $1.01 billion. But A Quiet Place: Day One also has cause to celebrate.
Director Michael Sarnoski's A Quiet Place: Day One's franchise-best opening night of $22.5 million quickly bloomed into a franchise-best opening weekend ($53 million), too. When John Krasinski's A Quiet Place debuted in 2018, the horror film made $50.2 million. And then in 2021, after its theatrical release had been delayed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, A Quiet Place Part II made $47.5 million over its opening weekend.
Day One also brought in an additional $45.5 million overseas, which means Sarnoski's flick nearly cracked the $100-million mark worldwide over its first weekend of release -- Day One made $98.5 million globally at the end of the day.

A Quiet Place: Day One boasted the best per-theater average with $14.293. And that leads to the most interesting thing of note: Inside Out 2 played in 732 more theaters (4,440) than Day One (3,708) over the weekend. Had Sarnoski's horror film been on equal footing with Inside Out 2, in terms of the same number of cinemas, and had that $14,293 per-theater average held, that equals over $10.4 million more for Day One... and a completely different outcome at No. 1.
Newcomers Blue Lock The Movie -Episode Nagi ($1.1 million), Last Summer ($30,300) and The Vourdalak ($8,115) all debuted outside of the Top 10.
